Dream Therapy

Traditional dream theories (Freud and Jung) interpret dreams through symbolic meaning. While influential, symbols can mean different depending on cultures or each person's personal experiences, and this approach does not reflect current scientific evidence. Today, dreams are more commonly understood as part of the brain’s natural processing of memory and emotion during sleep.

Dream Therapy – Kappas Style

What is Kappas-style Dream Therapy?

Dream Therapy is a natural approach that works with the mind’s activity during sleep to help you let go of thoughts, emotions, and patterns that are no longer serving you.

Sleep science shows that during sleep, the brain remains highly active in processing emotional experiences and organizing memory. Important information is consolidated, while less relevant emotional intensity is reduced. This process supports emotional balance, mental recovery, and mental clarity.

Kappas-style Dream Therapy works in alignment with this natural brain process, supporting the release of emotional or mental patterns that may interfere with well-being or personal progress.

Background of Dream Theory

Dreams have been studied for over a century in psychology, including by Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, who explored the symbolic and psychological meaning of dreams.

In parallel, more structured approaches to dream function were developed in modern hypnotherapy traditions.

This method is based on the work of John Kappas, who proposed that dreaming serves different functional stages related to how the mind processes emotional and cognitive information.

One of these stages is referred to as the venting stage, where the mind naturally releases internal mental and emotional load.

What is a Venting Dream?

A venting dream typically occurs in the later part of sleep, often closer to waking.

At this stage, the mind is thought to:

  • release unnecessary emotional tension

  • process unresolved mental material

  • restore internal balance

These dreams are often the ones people remember most clearly.

How it works

In a hypnotherapy setting, a Kappas-style approach uses guided relaxation and focused suggestion to help prepare the mind for a “venting dream,” meaning a dream where emotional or mental tension can be naturally processed during sleep.

Alternatively, this process can also be done on your own by using simple self-suggestion during the natural pre-sleep state, when the mind is receptive.

This approach may help reduce:

  • persistent stress or overthinking

  • emotional tension related to life situations

  • internal resistance toward change

  • feelings of being stuck or lacking direction

In many cases, clients are encouraged to recall and briefly record their dreams for reflection and tracking personal change. However, dream recall is not required. The process itself works during sleep, regardless of whether the dream is remembered.

Sleep and mental function

Adequate sleep is essential for this process to work effectively.

During sleep, the brain and body perform critical functions such as:

  • physical restoration

  • memory consolidation

  • emotional regulation

When sleep is insufficient, these processes may become less effective, which can affect both emotional stability and mental clarity.

Final note

Dream Therapy is a complementary approach that works with the natural processes of the mind during sleep. It is not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment when such support is needed.
